A Bully

A Bully

Most people remember high school as a wonderful time with their friends and their clubs. Unless you have a school bully in which in most cases it’s a whole group. Usually bullies are not a single person but a whole group. In today’s society where technology is everywhere no one can really be away from bullies. We see people on the news where students are killing themselves due to cyber bullying and in school bullying. Telling the truth, I would usually be in the group that would be bullying people. In the past people would mainly be bullied for their size or what race they are. Today’s bullies mainly consist of the wealthy, the popular, the preps, and the list goes on. Even though I am one these bullies it doesn’t mean I enjoy it. I use to be a victim of bullying, and I promised myself that I would not bully anyone like I was. That was six years ago when I didn’t have that much confidence or motivation. It is clear that I have not stuck with my promise. I have always wondered what the word bully meant, so I decided to search up the definition of the term bully. From dictionary.com the term bully is: a blustering, quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people. While searching for the definition I found statistics on 2011bullyingprogram.weebly.com/bulling-statistics.html about bullying.
-       1 out of 4 teens are bullied
-       9 out of 10 students experienced harassment
-       1 out of 5 admit being bullied or “doing some” bullying
I’m not surprised while looking at the statistics that cyber bullying is increasing all across the United States and the world.  There are many stories where people would take their own lives due to the incessant messages being sent to them. These messages would contain hurtful words like loser, no life, or nerd (Note: these are not the actual words used but censored versions). Bullies will not stop unless the victim is either dead or an adult is told about the situation.
There is a story I remember two years ago with a girl named Phoebe Prince who was bullied to the point of suicide. The story starts with Phoebe going out with the star football player at her school. The girls at the school known as the "alpha girls", or the popular girls got jealous of Phoebe for going out with the football player. Many girls at her school would torment her on Facebook or at school. Most of the bullying towards Phoebe was done on the internet or by text message. The bullying got so intense that Phoebe Prince got her sister's scarf and hanged herself. The disgusting part of the story was that after Phoebe's death the girls at the school mocked her death on Phoebe's Facebook page. Even after her death these vile, horrid, disgusting, and distasteful girls had the audacity to still make fun of this girl. Sometimes this world makes me sick.
Even though I have been known to bully, I understand why the opposing side bullies. Most people would say that the victim needed to have some courage or have a strong mental state. I agree with some people when they say the person needs courage. When I was bullied I wasn't the most confident person someone would know. I would be afraid to go to school because I was afraid what people would think of me. Most people bullied me because of my race or the lack of English comprehension I have.  I remember one time where one of my teachers (will not state what grade or teacher's name) made my mother cry because I'm a different race and couldn't speak proper English. This may have hurt my feelings a little but it taught me to stick up for myself and not to be afraid of what someone thinks. Sometimes I believe getting bullied is a way to teach someone to become confident and not be afraid of what people say about them. My concept is that bullying is wrong but without bullies some people can't be what they are now without them.
This video below is a documentary about bullies in America, and the hardship kids have to go through on a daily basis from bullies.

  1. I really liked how you connected with both sides. You showed that the bully can also be the one being bullied. I think that showing that side of the topic can help others see why a bully does what he/she does. The personal connection allowed me to understand bullies a little more. I also liked that you included the story of Phoebe. The mood flowed nicely as well. I was also fascinated by your viewpoint at the end. I never saw bullying as a confidence booster. Your blog turned a common topic into a very intriguing subject. Awesome job!

  2. First, I love how you straight up admit you were a bully. Not everyone is brave enough to say it, but you show just how apologetic you are. I agree with KKeveryday about your last standpoint of bullying teaching a lesson. I guess in some cases that is true. Also, your mention of Phoebe is the exact example of how bullying is bad. Good job. :)
