Those Lazy Americans

Have you ever been out to eat at a fast food restaurant or a concession stand, and someone left their trash on a table? I see it all the time where I work in the Renaud Spirit Center concession stand. It's seemingly harmless, yet dangerous to the environment.

If you're too lazy to throw away your trash in public, how do you do it at home? To those litterers, the world is their trash can. They don't care how gross it is to leave dirty napkins or salt from a pretzel on a table all because they're in a hurry or late for a date.

Elementary students are taught to clean up after themselves. Do we forget this with age? Do you not remember the clean up song? Littering must be contagious because I see it more and more. You suffer from this syndrome of not throwing your trash away if:

  • You see a trash can five feet from you, and you still don't throw your trash away.
  • You are lazy.
  • You believe the world is your trash bin and everyone else is the garbage man.
  • You pass trash on the street and don't pick it up.
  • You believe custodians are the ones who need to pick up after you.

On the other hand, some people do not always see the trash can and therefore cannot throw their trash away. Also, some people may be in a hurry to leave and completely forget to pick up after themselves. I suppose if you received a worrisome call in the middle of your meal and were so distraught that you had to leave right that second, you might forget your trash.

Picking up and throwing away your trash doesn't seem to be so hard. In fact, you use about 4 different body parts and very little muscle to do so.

No need to worry, this syndrome does have a cure. If you stop and take time to throw away your trash and maybe even someone elses', I'm sure you'll feel much better. You might even feel so overwhelmingly exasperated; you tell others to pick up their trash. Here's a link to a site with further instructions on how to stop littering: http://www.ehow.com/how_8200379_stop-littering.html.

So don't contribute to the "lazy American" stereotype, and pick up your trash everywhere you go. If elementary students can do it, so can you.

  1. Sam, great job! I think this is something everyone should have to read. I liked how you addressed both sides and determined that there are some occasions when you must leave your trash (emergencies) but that often times it is completely unnecessary. Another aspect of this blog I enjoyed was the reference to how we were taught to pick up after ourselves when we were little. That really hits home. The fact that you made your paper go full circle was even better! Terrific job...you should be proud!

  2. This is tremendous. The allusion to elementary school and the mentioning of the "All-Americans-Are-Lazy" stereotype are both completely on point. They go hand in hand and make your EBP so much stronger! I always go into fast food places and I see people litter. I usually pick it up if one of the workers doesn't beat me to it. This post really stuck it to anyone who does litter. Wonderful job!
